Back in 1945, two young Air Force pilots were hitchhiking back to base after a leave. It was the dead of winter in central Massachusetts, and the snow was drifted well over their heads on the side of the road. The two had just completed rigorous training and had qualified for a prestigious unit, ready for deployment. A Good Samaritan pulled over and let them into his car. The kindly driver told the pair that he would need to make a few stops along the way, but he would gladly take the young men to Springfield if they would have patience for his schedule.
After the second stop, the driver explained that he was collecting life insurance premiums from his clients (these were just a few dollars a piece back then) and he preferred to do it in person so he could stay in touch with each person he served. Before thinking much about it, one of the soldiers responded as he might have to one of the guys in the barracks-without much respect, but intending no real harm.
“That’s quite a racket you’ve got there,” he quipped. The driver’s face changed abruptly, and he steered the car off the road, so close to the snow bank that the passenger door would not have opened.
“You can climb out over me, or you can stay here and listen,” he said sternly. “The next stop I’m going to make, I won’t be collecting a payment; I’ll be delivering one. Even though it won’t bring back the husband and father of that household, it will be more money than they’ve probably ever seen in one check. And it will make all the difference in the lives of that family. So, make no mistake, what I do is no racket. I am serving my clients in a way that I can keep them going when they need it most. You boys should understand the importance of service. Am I right?
They did understand. And one of those Air Force pilots went on to become an extremely successful producer, who considered this story the one that changed his life and allowed him to find a career that gave his life significance for more than sixty years after that night. That young pilot was Bob Weaver.
